Sometimes a patient will complain of pain when eating or drinking something cold or sweet.
First we check for a cavity or crack in the tooth's enamel- if it is deep enough, it could expose the dentin area directly above the pulp, which is very sensitive to sweets as well as the temperature.
Another likely cause of this problem is receding gums. If the margin of the gum recedes below its normal position, it exposes part of the tooth that's not covered with enamel. This area contains nerve endings that can be almost as sensitive to temperature and sweets as the tooth's pulp.
It is important to brush these areas thoroughly, but it is also important not to brush them too hard, since improper brushing could cause further recession. Be sure to use a soft bristle toothbrush, brush with a rolling stroke instead of scrubbing back and forth.
If you've been experiencing any problem with hypersensitivity, be sure to ask us about it during your next checkup. Or if it is really bothering you, don't hesitate to call for an appointment.
